ARTIST INFORMATION

Gloria Kawai

Born in Hong Kong in the 1980s, Kawai has been brought up like any student of the same age. She practiced dancing and art as hobbies. Wanting to be an artist, she enrolled in the department of Fine Arts in the Chinese University of Hong Kong for undergraduate study. Since then she began to explore different fields of art, like installation, painting, sculpture, and photography. Nonetheless, her focus is always on painting, through which she could best express herself, even more than words and speech. She would not plan the work before she paints, or put it another way, she cannot do that; every painting was done like a process, layer by layer, with marks that she has selected to be kept left on each of them.
She has been awarded the best painting award in the Fine Arts department. After graduated, she continued her study in UCCA in Kent, majoring in jewellery design in the MA Three-Dimensional Design course. The shift does not terminate her career as an artist. She sees jewellery with an eye of an artist, and seeks opportunities in between them. Besides, she keeps on painting, even less pressured than before, which leads to her works turning in another direction, which is still being examined. Serendipity, her first solo show which was held in UK in 2007, was likely to show the turning point of her works, from a student right at the heart of the field of Fine Arts, to the periphery.
