ARTIST INFORMATION

Sung Young Hamilton(UEL)

I have been a working artist for 20 years both here in the UK and in my native Korea. I studied art first in Korea at Chukye University of Art in Seoul before moving to London to continue my studies. I have just recently completed my Professional Doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London.

My reason for making art is not only a desire to constantly find new and varied ways of expressing myself but also to explore and reveal aspects of my personality previously hidden from my conscious self. My art work has developed and grown in complexity and this has led to a simultaneous growth of self-knowledge that has enriched me both emotionally and intellectually.

My work is concerned with finding a visual language in which to express the concept of the space between the physical environment and psychological ideas about time, space and dreams. I am particularly interested in creating surreal images that have a decorative quality, reflecting a contemplation of daily life. I create dream-like qualities in my work by layering both figurative and abstract geometric forms in one image. The paintings are hard-edged and the imagery is apparently simple, but the layering is very complex and spatially ambiguous.
