ARTIST INFORMATION

Michael Pearce

My work comes from an interest in how things grow from unattached pieces of inspiration and influence to centered pieces of work. I use a transfer technique to apply my starting points, which are pulled from my drawings; moments which I have recorded, things which hold me for a time, this gathering happens daily, each moment reacted to in an entirely unique manner. There is no planned direction or sense of where they may lead, but there are little unconscious decisions being made all the time creating a sense of meaning and momentum.

Using paint thinners and emulsion paint I move, spread and distort my transferred imagery, at these moments I allow the process to flow through me and trust my instincts to let the work become what it needs to be, again thousands of unique decisions culminate in work that now appears to have a direction and a pulse. My pieces often take on an illusionary nature due to the tonal qualities of a monochromatic approach, I enjoy this confusion of space and unintentional imagery.
