Pauline Jones

Born in Merseyside in 1946, at the age of 10 I knew that images were a primary communication for me I studied painting at the Central School of Art and Design ’64 – ’68 and did a postgrad. At the Slade. I began to sell landscape paintings and then fell out of the gallery system, as I started to paint cracks in walls, full of existential angst.
I earned my living doing graphic design, animation, book illustration and textile design, all to support my painting habit and let it unfold without pressure.I became ensnared in Photo Realist painting and almost ground to a halt. At the end of the 80’s a series of traumatic life events sent me into a nosedive . During recovery with help,I then found my painting territory at the tender age of 45.
I am now prolific, still exploring and have shown and sold work in mixed exhibitions in Italy, Germany ,Australia and USA. Like many painters I continue with the search to put work out.

Some images I trawl for, some I receive unbidden, others I tussle with in the margins of error and uncertainty. I receive images at any time, whilst waking, sleeping, walking, dancing, listening to music ( eyes shut ),meditating, pausing … Some of these internal pictures are perfect and I receive them as gifts. Others are unclear, intruiging or fugitive and these are the ones that become paintings. Or they just offer a starting point and often slip into chaos before arriving at a final image on canvas, related to the beginning or far removed. I now realise that looking at a finished painting is the final stage enabling me to integrate what I have discovered.
