My work is primarily concerned with exploring landscapes and cityscapes through memory and mood. ‘Atmosphere ‘ is as important as a sense of place in these paintings, and I build up layers and veils of paint and glazes to suggest hidden forms and ‘pentimenti’ in and on the picture surface …a deserted building, football pitch or landscape can evoke feelings that are both uplifting and melancholy at the same time.
I am also interested in the marks that people leave in the landscape…tracks, roads, paths and desire lines all reflect the human traffic that has created them, and faint traces of communication lines give a hint of the lives and history that have been associated with a site for generations.
I also enjoy printmaking and regularly produce monoprints, drypoints and etchings.
