ARTIST INFORMATION

Neville Sattentau

Neville Sattentau worked as an illustrator and illuminator for more than 20 years. He was commissioned by private patrons to make manuscripts and books on vellum using mineral pigments in egg tempera technique with gold, silver and platinum leaf and precious and semiprecious stones. The manner of working resembles a medieval illuminator; the images however are more contemporary. Kubla Khan by Coleridge, Sinbad the Sailor, Pardoners’ Tale by Chaucer, Dante’s Paradiso and Ecclesiastes are among the texts that he has illustrated with accompanying calligraphy. Since 1996 he has been painting larger size images on heavy hotpress paper, always in egg tempera. These pictures are often landscapes, frequently peopled, and usually with some short text appearing in the image. Neville Sattentau has had various exhibitions and has sold work in the UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, South Africa and USA.
