This is the first in a projected series depicting the towers and spires of churches in the City; shown L-R are the City Temple, St. Nicholas Cole Abbey and Christ Church Newgate Street. The ink used for the washes is Chinese ink, which traditionally can be diluted to seven shades of black, with touches of watercolour.

'Painting in waterbased media is one of the great joys of my life, together with music. I am particularly drawn to still life as a subject and enjoy putting together groups of objects, which may have a common theme or may be quite disparate, but which sit well together. China, glass, lace, patterned fabrics and vegetables often form a starting point for a still life set-up.

In my job I deal with historic buildings day by day, but soon discovered that a training in technical drawing...
