Transcendence is directly inspired by two paintings in the Barber Institute of Fine Art collection Birmingham. The works are Murillo’s The Marriage Feast at Cana and Botticelli’s The Madonna and Child with the Infant St John. The artist was interested in the captured moment and how that focuses upon the action of spirituality. She was also intrigued by the fleeting gesture and how this could have transcendent significance.

Caroline Jariwala is a painter, visiting lecturer, exhibitions organiser and community artist.

Jariwala’s intensely coloured paintings describe a personal interpretation of Italian Renaissance art with Hindu iconograpghy.

Since qualifying as a teacher in 1990, she has worked on projects in schools, art galleries and community venues. Her experience covers a wide range of art forms, such as illustration, batik, mural and mosaic.
