I painted this in an apartment at the top of a house in the Tuscan countryside where I painted over several years. The lady who owned the house was very helpful when I asked her if she had a straw hat I might use, she brought me a selection of hats, some very bizarre. The one I chose with the green sash and flower was perfect for the chair. I had to have a lamp on behind me in order to see the whole of the doors and shutters. A friend of mine wrote a poem about the painting. I painted this over four months.

Patricia Buckley was born in Sussex and and won a scholarship to West Sussex College of Art, then moved to London where she attended very inspiring painting classes run by Leslie Cole, Head of Fine Art at the Central School of Art. Later, Patricia met an American artist, Myron Barnstone, who opened her eyes to the geometry within Art and Nature. The first painting she framed was shown in the Royal Academy summer exhibition.
