This is a painting about prayer in action, as well as meditation. A woman prays in the background while two women create a rangoli pattern using the symbol of Vishnu at its centre. Vishnu is seen as the preserver of the universe and protector of creation in the Hindu Trinity. Rangoli is traditionally a colourful floor design made from coloured rice powder, white rice paste, flowers or sand produced for special occasions as well as a daily early morning ritual by the female head of the house.

Chakra literally translated from Hindi means ‘wheel of spinning energy’. Some cultures believe that the human body has seven main Chakras, which are located within the body, and are aligned vertically up and down the spinal column. Each Chakra has a specific colour, certain emotions and characteristics associated with it.

Caroline Jariwala is a painter, visiting lecturer, exhibitions organiser and community artist.

Jariwala’s intensely coloured paintings describe a personal interpretation of Italian Renaissance art with Hindu iconograpghy.

Since qualifying as a teacher in 1990, she has worked on projects in schools, art galleries and community venues. Her experience covers a wide range of art forms, such as illustration, batik, mural and mosaic.
