The year 2005, was the year that I began my fine art degree. One of the very first projects that we were given at the start of the course was life drawing, quick sketches of a model posing on a podium in the centre of the class. The following day was still life, drawing large quantities of fabric draped over a pole that ran across the top of the ceiling.
We then had to bring all our images together to create one, Lost was born. My drawings became simplified and took on new meaning. The character sitting on the left side of the painting seems withdrawn, perhaps this is an expression of how I felt at the start of my course, or as with anything new in life, how one feels until you find you belong. On the other hand, the person standing with their arms open is suggesting that this is the time in your life that you can spread your wings and be free. Which is further emphasised by the draping lines of the material that represent the different directions that life can take you.
My choice of colour was inspired by Francis Bacon’s Study after Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X, 1953, his distorted portrait influenced my use of black, white and yellow paint. While the black creates a sense of emptiness, the streaks of white and yellow bring light to my painting as do the broken mirror pieces, that were put in place to symbolise reflection, being able to look back at life.
