The Star Ferry is well known to travellers who have visited Hong Kong. In this painting it is shown against a backdrop of buildings on the main island. Ocre underpainting shows through in places to give a luminous quality. Dark blocking has been used in the shadows with lighter paint scraped over to provide greater depth.

Hugh Woodeson's work evokes a sense of place, often catching the dichotomy between an enveloping city landscape and the isolation of the onlooker. His use of light emphasises and contrasts bulk and space. By allowing, at times, the intense colour of underpainting to show through he creates an added depth and luminosity. Increasingly his work is becoming more textured.
