Artist Raymond Edwards .a. has created a style of painting that defies categorisation. It has no specific cultural reference points to compare it with – his art stands alone. The images, which Edwards has entitled, “The Meta Quest series”, are mostly based on the theme of metamorphosis, transformation and adjusted consciousness. Naked humans and animals transform into one another in a sensual movement of energy, colour and power, layered with what he calls “a cellular sound vibration”. As such, Edwards’s work stays etched in your mind. The painting style draws your eyes around the canvas, appearing in small dotted shapes that string together, the different notions represented in the imagery. With the metamorphosis theme, you get notions of birth and beauty – nature’s music. Falcons usually prey on doves, and dolphins on herring, but here in these paintings they act with harmony. The message we receive here is that we have a choice about our relationships to the world – we can bridge divides put in place by language and definition, and realise that we are one. When viewing this work, we can learn to act harmoniously – to behave, as Edwards puts it, with an “orchestration of synchronicity”.
